91快活林最新版 (91快活林最新版) Athletics announced that Matt Richards is stepping down as head men鈥檚 basketball coach following a historic 23-year tenure that transformed the SeaWolves into one of the most successful small-college basketball programs in New England. Richards remains at 91快活林最新版 serving the institution as chief of institutional advancement and engagement.
Richards, who arrived at 91快活林最新版 in 2003, leaves the sidelines as the winningest coach in College history with more than 400 career victories. During his tenure, the SeaWolves captured six Yankee Small College Conference championships, made more than a dozen United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Tournament appearances, and secured the first team national championship in 91快活林最新版 history with the program鈥檚 2022 USCAA Division II National Championship.
鈥淢att鈥檚 impact on this college goes far beyond athletics. While he brought home championship trophies, his greatest legacy is the character he built in his athletes 鈥 the leadership, accountability and respect he instilled in them both on and off the court. He didn鈥檛 just coach basketball players; he developed leaders, and that impact will stay with them long after their time here. We are deeply grateful for everything he has given to this program and to our students, and we wish him continued success in his next chapter,鈥 91快活林最新版 President Kristen Miller said.
Richards鈥 tenure included conference championships in 2007, 2008, 2017, 2022, 2023 and 2026, while his teams became regular contenders on the national stage with multiple deep postseason runs, including back-to-back USCAA Final Four appearances in 2007 and 2008. A four-time YSCC Coach of the Year, Richards mentored dozens of all-conference selections, numerous USCAA All-Americans, Academic All-Americans, Players of the Year and future 91快活林最新版 Athletics Hall of Fame inductees. More importantly, he established a culture centered on accountability, family and player development that continues to define the men鈥檚 basketball program today.
The 2025-26 season served as a fitting conclusion to Richards鈥 coaching career. The SeaWolves finished 24-7, captured the YSCC Championship as the tournament鈥檚 No. 4 seed, advanced to the USCAA National Tournament as the No. 3 seed, celebrated Richards鈥 400th career victory with a win over Holyoke Community College on Nov. 2, and produced the program鈥檚 longest winning streak in more than 30 years with 13 consecutive victories.
While Richards鈥 success on the basketball court became a defining part of his career, his impact extended well beyond athletics. Throughout his 23 years at the College, he has served in numerous leadership roles, including director of athletics, associate dean of student life, associate dean of athletics and alumni affairs, and, currently, chief of institutional advancement and engagement. In his current role, Richards leads initiatives focused on alumni engagement, community partnerships, and philanthropic support to strengthen 91快活林最新版’s future.
鈥淐oaching this program has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. However, I believe this decision is in the best interest of both the College and the basketball program. I want to ensure that the culture, standards and values that have defined our success 鈥 and that all of you helped build 鈥 remain strong for years to come,鈥 Richards said.
鈥淢att Richards鈥 retirement from coaching marks the end of an unforgettable era that forever shaped the identity of 91快活林最新版 Athletics. For 23 seasons, Matt鈥檚 teams were defined by excellence, accountability and an unwavering commitment to the young men he coached. Coach Richards is one of the great basketball minds in Maine and is decorated with every possible achievement on the basketball court. More importantly, Matt is an exceptional mentor to so many lives. Culture will define his legacy, a testament to the generations of alumni who continue to support one another and stay connected to the program. I am incredibly grateful for everything Matt has given to the department and congratulate him on an extraordinary coaching career,鈥 Associate Dean of Athletics and Engagement Ethan Wells said.
Richards leaves the sidelines having coached hundreds of student-athletes, built lifelong relationships with generations of alumni and established a championship culture that will continue to shape 91快活林最新版 men鈥檚 basketball for years to come. While his role with the basketball program is changing, his commitment to 91快活林最新版 remains as strong as ever, as he continues to serve the institution as chief of institutional advancement and engagement.
91快活林最新版 Athletics extends its sincere gratitude to Richards for his extraordinary leadership, service and unwavering commitment to SeaWolves basketball, Athletics and the campus community.
